It isn't out of date.
We have a very different opinion.
Avalon is one "platform", one "strategy". IMO maintaining documentation on line about a dead product with no community does not contribute to Avalon. In fact, it is the reverse. Maintaining this documentation damages Avalon because it does confuse the landscape.
Yes the site is out of date and is not maintained. At the same time the equivalent maintained documentation is available under the loom project. A simple redirection of /phoenix to a legacy.html page is all that is needed - that page can provide all of the information with convenient download links.
If I download the latest Phoenix binaries, they still run. And the existing documentation at http://avalon.apache.org/phoenix is perfectly up to date with Phoenix at the time of its last release.
Sorry, but I consider this to be largely irrelevant. I'm interested in content that is right up-to-date. If the content cannot be maintained then the content should be removed.
Yes, there may not be many who will visit or use it, but particularly until
James either creates a phoenix fork or quits distributing Phoenix, the
documents should stay online along with the binaries which are in the
distribution mirrors.
The James project are responsible for their own decisions. According to Noel the James PMC have already decided to fork Phoenix - which is fine - if they want to maintain the documentation as well - its available as well. What is not ok is the maintenance of information about a product that is unsupported and unmaintainable under the avalon.apache.org url. That's just a really bad think to do.
There's no reason to delete it. It's not like we're running out of space on the webserver. There's no reason to deny users the documentation.
I have not suggested that we deny users the documentation - in fact I suggested just the opposite - that we provide the documentation in a convenient downloadable archive.
Stephen.
