For getting started reading data, there are some public S3 buckets on which Amazon hosts data used in tutorials. For example, you should be able to access s3://awssampledbuswest2 which is referenced in Redshift tutorials [0].
Amazon also has a free tier for S3 for the first year an account is open, which you could use to write some test data to S3 without incurring charges.
