My personal opinion is that it may be a non-trivial amount for some components
to build on JDK7 (see HIVE-4583, for example). I have had some experience
looking into that for Hive and while things may have gotten better in later
releases, my dated knowledge seems to suggest that it's not something we can do
overnight.
We should move to Java7, I just don't think Bigtop 0.8 is the right timeline
for that, unless it's impossible to build HBase without it.
