They're plain-text mails. No HTML markup there. You have to teach your
mail client to use a monospaced font in this case.

This is one of the reasons why I don't use the GMail web interface: it
sucks rocks when it comes to any kind of advanced configuration, besides
being totally impenetrable for heavy-duty mail usage. I like my
Thunderbird with IMAP just fine, thanks. :)
