REST API is now compatible. So this is ready for review @geomacy @neykov

Apologies for the size -- hopefully between this and the ML it is clear why
there was so much. Perhaps I should have disabled it so it could have been
merged incrementally but I was not expecting so much more to be needed.
Still it is all good stuff moving forwards. We are now very close to being
able to remove _all_ the catalog code, in favour of the very simple
`TypeRegistry`.
