an alternative which just occurred to me would be a richer persistence
description--
persistence(SensorPersistenceMode.REQUIRED)
where there could be `NONE`, or `BEST_EFFORT`, or `OCCASIONALLY`, or even
`REQUIRED_SYNCHRONOUS`
