Hi all, Recently, I came across "What Goes Around Comes Around... And Around..." by M. Stonebraker and A. Pavlo which was published in SIGMOD record June 2024. The authors analyze, categorize, and comment on the last 20 years of data model and query language activity in databases.
Although I don't fully agree with their viewpoints on every subject, they provide nice insights about past and future trends in the database world. The main reason that I am sharing this paper here is because I like their concluding remarks cited below. "...To accelerate the next generation of DBMSs, the community should foster the development of open-source reusable components and services. There are some efforts towards this goal, including for file formats (see Sec. 3.3), query optimization (e.g., Calcite, Orca), and execution engines (e.g., DataFusion, Velox)..." I strongly believe that Calcite will be a crucial part for building the next generation DBMS that will come out in the near future.
