Has there been any thought in the past to creating submodules like 
camel-mustang and camel-dolphin, compiled with JDK 6 and 7, to allow for 
components to require JDK6 or 7? Similar to the way spring had spring-tiger for 
so many years?

It may have made more sense for JDK5 than for 6, but I could see people wanting 
to leverage some of the new stuff in JDK7 for camel components right away, NIO2 
Fork-Join, etc...(if we ever see a JDK7 :) )
