Thanks for the response and taking the time to dig through git history!

I suspect there is a technical reason/use-case, perhaps related to Gradle. Both 
Spring and Camel use gradle instead of Maven and use fixed versions in their 
bots, and they have special plugin handlers to release/deploy the bom.
