This conversation comes up quite a bit as it pertains to a lot of Apache groups, especially the Cassandra groups. I've advocated in the past for a more standard way of unsubscribing, such as responding with "UNSUBSCRIBE" in the subject line or body, or more of a link-based approach rather than a special email account you need to send a message to.
Thing is unless you subscribe to a lot of Apache mailing lists, this is not a normal way of subscribing and unsubscribing from distributions. So, from a user perspective, it's easy to see how people can get confused as to how to actually unsubscribe. Which is why I linked to the Apache Cassandra community page as an effort to point folks in the right direction that may be wondering the same thing.
