Java 1.5 is long gone and now Oracle supports Java 7 on Mac.
Oracle only supports Java 7 on OSX 10.7. That's a pretty small subset of users. And without a button in the Software Update, take-up will be tiny. The openjdk7 project still seems quite a way from releasing on OSX. There is no macport yet either. But more importantly in this discussion are the machines which are stuck on Java 5. That's pretty much everything 32bit (and a small number of early 64bit machines).
Going forward, do we still care to support old 32 bit Macs and their Java 1.5 install?
Well, it has historically been me pushing for support for older machines. But in 2012 I am finding little resistance forcing customers onto 64bit as a minimum OSX requirement, so Java 5 is effectively gone amongst those customers. This is in the education industry in Australia... results may differ for other countries and industries. I'm -0 on this, since 3.2 is probably a year away. That is, I don't see the point in excluding any users without substantial benefit, but if it makes the lives of Andrus or other developers easier, then go for it. On principle, I dislike the forced obsolescence from companies (particularly Apple)... it is 5 years old therefore only useful for landfill. But we do need to move forward at some point and the main material gain (I think) will be the cleanup of the JDBC4 implementation....
