To me the site workflow is using "maven-site-plugin". I don't think we care for any of that. We execute docbook plugin, with expectation that it generates pdfs and htmls anywhere under "target/". So there's nothing special, just a thin wrapper for docbook tools.

IIRC initially you checked in an example of how to do docbook, and we created 4 fresh "book" projects based on that example, and then got rid of the example. I think the original XSLs survived tho (and of course this is all in SVN history).
