The cloud templates provided by Ubuntu and CentOS (Debian doesn't provide one) can work out of the box if we support http://1692.254.169.254/ as a metadata URL. I believe this is as simple as adding this IP to the VR (+ a DNAT rule in the VR?) for advanced zone. For Basic Zone the default router is not the VR, so additional DNAT rule will have to be added on the xenbr0 bridge.
