In the case of Cocoon, this is an important feature that allows to benefit of the SAX pipeline streaming, and thus send content back to the browser before full processing of the request is finished. Now if you really need this, you can subclass of XMLSerializer and override the shouldSetContentLength() method so that it returns true.
