Hello Rory, it's been some time since we've had contact regarding a commons net 1.4.x service release.
In fact I have applied the patches mentioned below that we needed to our own branch of commons net, and deployed them with Eclipse. So yes, these patches are tested and known to be good. Eclipse is now going the next round of release train, and I'd be interested to get these fixes into an officially released version.
