There are quite a few private instance fields that are not changed after construction, but which are not final.
OK if I add the final qualifer to them? Also, SoftRefFilesCache and DefaultFileMonitor use a boolean to communicate between threads, but don't use synch. Adding volatile would fix this. Do you want me to create JIRAs for these, or shall I just fix them?
