Such a marker exists in the build's version string. 

Using 'java -version' produces 

java version "1.8.0_40-ea"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_40-ea-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.40-b09, mixed mode)

for JDK 8u40 EA build b05, for example.
