Anton, the release tarballs definitely include a configure which works on OSX 
ML. If you're building from a git checkout then you need to run ./bootstrap 
first, as indicated in the 
https://github.com/apache/couchdb/blob/master/DEVELOPERS assuming this is 1.3.x 
or master.

Let me know which branch you're trying and if you still have issues.

I'll see about linking all of this information together for the next release.
