Joan Touzet commented on COUCHDB-348:
-------------------------------------
Maybe we "had this backwards" from the start, but it's too late to change it
now.
We know for a fact that your suggestion breaks some programmatic clients
hitting /. Earlier this year, [~rnewson] and [~drsm79] I believe had a list of
specific clients that broke on this, and it's a non-insignificant percentage of
the world. It would also break naive curl samples and how-tos that have been
around for years - it's way, way more than just Futon and Fauxton that hit / !
> / should redirect to a human readable page when accessed from a browser

> As more people are adopting CouchDB, the number of questions along the lines
> of "All I see is {"couchdb":"Welcome","version":"0.10.0a773399"}, what now?"
> If this page redirected to /_utils/ (or maybe something more user-focussed)
> when the accept headers included html, we could make the first-time user
> experience more palatable.
> There's some code in COUCHDB-234 that might be helpful here.
