There are a number of Java-based software systems that we need to
interoperate with that are still using Java 8, and their compatibility with
newer JVMs than Java 8 is unknown.

One example of such is Apache Drill.

So as much as I'd like to suggest migration from Java 8 to new, and
possibly more secure and faster Java JVMs I think we need to maintain Java
8 compatibility for a good while still.

We should probably make a ticket for any Java 11 requirements that have
crept in, to revise back down to Java 8 compatibility.

Thoughts?
