SparkPythonRunner must be assuming that Python 2.x is being used, however I am using Python 3.6. When I switch to Python 2.7 it works. I think for now we should add a note to the README about Python version support and add a TODO to make it work with Python 3.x. There is no reason why it shouldn't work on Python 3.x right?
