On the page http://dba.openoffice.org/drivers/postgresql/index.html
an example is given for connecting to a host using a host= option.

I suggest, having had to root around to find the answer, that an
example is given for use of UNIX domain sockets where the socket is
not in /tmp, for example on Debian systems:

host=/var/run/postgresql

did the trick.
