Hello everyone,
I repost this to this list, as there was only one reply on

Some days ago, I had the opportunity to talk with Stefan Taxhet about
the mirroring system of OpenOffice.org and possibilities to enhance the
distribution of extra components.
I maintain one server of the Germanophone project/association that
distributes some extra components, including the German ISO. Some of you
may remember the discussion from March, where I cried for help and
server capacities as we simply ran out of bandwith due to the high
demand for our files. :-)
In short:
There exist a lot of extra components for OpenOffice.org like ISOs,
localized versions of PortableOpenOffice.org, CWS snapshots and so on.
Unfortunately, many of these components don't fit into the existing
rsync namespace due to hard disk space issues - not all mirrors are
capable of mirroring gigabytes of extra stuff.
At the moment, most of these projects are being mirrored privately
outside the openoffice rsync namespace (or even not being mirrored at
all), and we would like to change that situation. Private mirroring is
not effective, as it is more complicated to integrate new mirrors, and
structures are being created that are outside the scope of our mirroring
system. Having everything related to project and program together in the
mirroring would be fine. Work has to be done only once, and everyone
could profit.
The proposal:
The current openoffice rsync module should not be touched, so existing
mirrors are not being affected at all and no changes are necessary. An
extra module called openoffice-extended should be introduced. Quoting
Stefans proposal[1], "this rsync module would include the content of
[openoffice] and be a superset containing all the data". Thus, mirrors
being capable of mirroring additional files could easily switch over to
the new module and help distributing additional components. All paths
would stay the same, but some extra directories would show up,
containing the extended stuff.
Stefan has enough capacities for acting as a master server, and I would
volunteer for coordinating that new module. So, my question for today
is: Who of you would agree in mirroring an rsync module
openoffice-extended? Who has enough hard disk space for doing so, or can
gather enough space in the next weeks?
According to the listing[2], we need about 75 GB for the extended
module, maybe a little bit more for projects currently not residing in
this directory. If that is too much, maybe some data could be removed
from the module, or we could even split up further, like extended/devel,
extended/iso etc. - but let's first see what is possible for you.
I can only speak for myself, but having some additional mirrors would
help a lot for distributing files, and I would love to see that
mirroring going on in an "official" mirroring system.
Looking forward to your help and feedback,
Florian
