I plan to post about Metalink on as many mirroring lists as possible. If you
know of any I've missed, please let me know. :)

I'm sorry that segmented downloading uses your resources. As I've replied
before, that is not the only thing Metalink can be used for. I have
mentioned before that I am asking for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Since you
(repeatedly) seem unfamiliar with this, it would be something like
suggestions on how to improve Metalink so there can be more info on each
mirror, and things mirrors would prefer such as (currently only the first
two, location and preference are supported by clients):

    location="fr"
    preference="100"
    resume="yes"
    segment="yes"
    maxsegments="2"
    segmentsize="1024"
    maxconnections="1000"

If this information is listed for each mirror, allowing them to show if they
allow or do not allow segmented downloads and only for the redundancy of
extra links in case some fail, would that be a solution?

> As I am lazy, I will quote my last answer (FreeBSD mirroring ML) :

We have something in common! I will quote my same last reply:

While some people are using metalinks for segmented downloads, others are
not. Some people use them for the enhanced reliability of having extra links
to fall back on. I can not force download managers or metalink clients to
change how they have been behaving for years, but I can encourage them to be
respectful of server resources. Which is why I have been asking for
suggestions on how to improve things.

Can you think of some per transfer and per server options that would help
the situation?

Maybe something like for each transfer max connections and max servers and
for servers something like max connections and segment size?
