Hi Peter,
the "bad" thing seems to be that MB creates for every file a separate
checksum. This can be displayed only when adding the ".md5" suffix to
the file URL. But there is no complete overview like in the .txt file
(or possibility to get or create this), right? Please tell me if I'm wrong.
A single file with all checksums can be easier linked somewhere than to
offer hundreds of separate links.
Normally I would add a link right to every downloadable file, e.g., on
the "other.html" or "all_rc.html" website. But this would blow-up the
links in the table totally. ;-(
1. Currently I think about to stop uploading separate .txt files to the
mirror and provide it only on the webserver with the download websites.
Additionally I would add some text that the user can also verify the
checksum directly on the server and maybe compare it with the checksum
in the .txt file and what he got locally on the PC. This could provide
another level of security and trust.
But even this is not a really good solution as the normal enduser has to
create this special URL (file + md5 suffix) to get the checkum. So, a
clickable solution is needed.
2. Another thought is to replace the .txt file with a .html file. The
content wouldn't be the typical "checksum + file" lines but clickable
HTML links that points to the checksums on Mirrorbrain, like the
following (it could be also enhanced for SHA1 and SHA256):
3.2.1rc1_md5sums.html:
<a
href="http://download.services.openoffice.org/files/extended/3.2.1rc1/OOo_3.2.1rc1_20100506_Win_x86_install-wJRE_ar.exe?md5">OOo
3.2.1 RC 1 Windows (wJRE) ar , click to get MD5 checksum</a>
...
What do you think about this?
BTW:
At what time is Mirrorbrain creating the checksum:
- When clicking on the link?
- Or is it already available in the system and justed displayed?
Thanks
Marcus

Hi Peter,
yes, it can. :-)
Has to be a new feature. I didn't know it before. This could save a bit time to
upload release builds.
This is indeed a new feature. I hope it's useful!
I'll think how to provide this new service and how to let the users know on the
download websites.
Thanks. Maybe you find a good way for that. Or if you have different ideas
maybe, please let me know!
Peter
