I've no file roller available at the moment, but cannot see a problem to
unpack them in a terminal. Have you tried it on the command line, too?
Another thing you should do is to verify that your download is not
broken. Use this file to get the MD5 checksums:

On Linux the md5sum command should be installed by default already, so a:
md5sum OOo_3.3.0_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-{GB,US}.tar.gz
should show the same hash values.
As alternative you can try to download the files from another mirror:
http://distribution.openoffice.org/mirrors#mirrors
