This is very sudden news about Gerry Singleton. He died of a heart
attack on May 12th in a Toronto hospital.
I just talked with him on the phone about 5 days ago. He was
discussing the User Guide, and his plans for moving it forward, and
I found out his mother passed away about a week ago. Just the type
guy he was, he mentioned what was going on in his personal life
after the project was being discussed.
He has been co-lead on this project since May of 2004, and was
helping the project along for awhile before then. I consider him
to be a very close friend, even though we never met in person.
Which is the way it is with online communities like ours. We have
talked about a trip to Toronto at some point, but always felt there
was time.
My thoughts go out to his family, especially after losing two
members so quickly. His absence will definitely be felt.

Thanks Scott. I learned of Gerry's death this morning, shortly before
I was to attend a conference, and could not respond as I wanted to.
But the news has dwelled with me all day, as I am sure it will for
many days to come.
I moved to Toronto nearly two years ago, and Toronto was Gerry's
town. We met shortly after I arrived, and though our schedules and
where we lived prevented us from doing very much together,
nevertheless I felt more at home because of Gerry's efforts. Gerry
was occasionally gruff--this was his character--but he was always,
always *for* the project and willing (and able) to help all. I came
deeply to respect Gerry, for his work, his integrity, his consideration.
I'll miss Gerry.
Best,
Louis
