I agree that topic size may actually be an issue. If you split books by
chapter, the individual chapters may get too big to handle via wiki.
Maybe you need to get more granular.
I've started splitting some of the larger chapters of the OOoAuthors
guides into sub-chapters, and have been thinking about ways to improve
on the result (eg "next topic" - "previous topic" links) without too
much manual work. I confess to having very little experience with wikis,
so I don't know any tricks to make this easier.
We've been experimenting with this here for bringing the Dev Guide
to the wiki (we have an internal wiki as sandbox) and used templates
that actually work quite nicely with a book-level TOC and previous/next
links.
references to different parts would, mean a lot of extra work between
formats as this is not supported in the wiki?
References inside the wiki just work fine, I see no problem there.
References within the wiki work fine, but I don't know a way to automate
putting them in, so they have been a lot of extra work. The tool I used
to convert ODT to wiki format turned all the x-refs into text (which did
not surprise me). But other than putting pre-existing ODT material onto
the wiki, that might not be a big issue.
The initial move to the wiki definitely requires some extra work upfront,
but that will eventually pay off (I hope...)
