You and some of the other respondents are looking at this in quite a different (and more complex) way than I was, which means that I wasn't very clear in my previous note to this list.

What I have in mind is a not-terribly-long document (30 pages?) outlining "things you can do to make your docs work more reliably" for ordinary OOo users needing to share docs with MSO users. ...

And, perhaps, this isn't a project worth pursuing, because of the complexity and the moving target. ...

FWIW, what you're suggesting was clear to me and I do think it would be worth doing.

I didn't mean to throw a wet blanket on the idea, only to underscore the scope of the issue, and to follow up on the suggestion to check existing issues.

Sorry, interoperability with MS is a pet peeve of mine, and that probably came through more than I consciously intended.

My personal opinions regarding "interoperability with MS" are strongly negative. I avoid it myself and I recommend to anyone who asks to avoid it as well. Not because I hate MS, but because I think it's a waste of time to try and interoperate with them.

I see people losing time and work because they've chosen to default to saving in MS formats. I see people causing others on their projects to lose time because they tried to use OOo in "stealth mode" and suddenly the document they've been working on blows up.

The interop will never be perfect, and when it fails, it's OOo that looks bad, along with the people who promoted it.

My first and strongest recommendation is that people choose which product they're going to use and use it exclusively. Of course, my pitch and my vote is for OOo, but I defer to the team's decision.

But that's all just my personal bias--perfectionist and all that. I realize many people want to do it in spite of the risks, and would welcome any help we can give.

However, for conscience' sake, any such guide should begin with "here there be worms" in big red letters ;-)
