For now we do that only after the first level heading. Sublevels are often like for example "Switching off the Word Completion" and then follow the steps 1., 2. and so on. A normal text paragraph after the heading would be "To switch off the word completion do the following:" but that would only repeat the heading and inflate the help texts. But I will reconsider that when I am creating the style guide.

The writer could employ another (optional) paragraph style or XML element for introducing a numbered list--name it, perhaps, NumberedIntro. Then the writer won't need to go down to a lower-level section/subhead for the numbered or procedure list, and the optional text lead-in is present--if desired. A short paragraph could even be included with the ListItem element.

Even a simple Para element lead-in could be used for that, but having available an additional style/tag/element is preferable. Besides, the online help segments are usually way too short for having many lower-level sections--or is already a lower-level section.

And what might be used in OOo docs for the kludging run-in subheads as commonly used in FrameMaker, InDesign, etc? Using a character style--Strong emphasis, perhaps--for the introductory word(s)?

And how come OOo doesn't seem to use the ubiquitous DocBook, which was specifically invented for documenting software?
