Since the pdf is for screen viewing we may also (if at all possible) create
hyperlinks to the full size pictures and only place a thumbnails in the text
(just like in the wikis). This could also address the issue on the number of
pictures in the user guides discussed in another thread (people who do not
care can skip opening the full size pictures.

I don't know enough about how this is done in a PDF. Where would the
full-size images be kept? Embedded somewhere in the PDF, or on the
Web? Since the books are going on the wiki, too, presumably the images
could be the same ones.

However, if the full-size pictures are stored on the Web, I'm
concerned because "onscreen" does not equal "online". People will not
necessarily be connected to the Internet when reading the PDFs, unlike
reading the wiki. I really think our PDFs need to be standalone.

Is there a way to embed the pictures in the PDF so they are not
visible full size until/unless the reader clicks on the thumbnail? How
is this done in the ODT file? How much extra work will it be for the
writer?

In general, if creating electronic-only versions of the user guide we should
try to be a bit more creative.

In general, I agree, but not if the creative solutions cause other
problems for readers. And at this point, if the creative solution
causes significant extra work for the writers, then it could mean an
unfortunate choice between "getting it done, though not ideally" and
"getting only a bit done, but really nicely". The "nice to have"
features might have to come later.

Oh, and a peripheral consideration: having the images linked to
thumbnails is likely to cause significant extra work when producing
the printed books. I realise that lots of you don't care whether there
are printed books or not, but other people want them... or at least
they want Getting Started and the Writer Guide in book form, because
those books sell steadily. I suspect that once I get them on Amazon,
they'll sell a lot more copies.
