working on the howto for calc functions have brought up the following
question: Should a formula be a stored image or should we use wiki-math,
which leads to generated images when sent to the browser and editable
source text in the wiki itself.

I would like to get your opinions.
I see a connection to the problem connecting Wiki and application help.
Will we have a system, where Wiki pages can be shown directly in the
help window of the application? And if yes, will such a system work with
generated images or must there be stored images?
I have a preference for using WikiMath because it is so much easier to
fix and expand as needed - especially if the original author it not
around/available. If we use fixed images created in other applications,
then someone needs to know how to regenerate the fixed image when a
change is required as well as have access to hat external application.
That can be a problem if, say for example, I was trying to generate a
new formula to replace one drking had created in Microsoft Office... I
don't have access to any Microsoft software (I don't have Windows, or MS
Office at home or at work). (referencing the Talk page linked above).
On top of that, the images created were tweaked in an image editing
program. That makes it very difficult for other people to change the
original image or produce one of similar look and quality (I am not
saying that the way drking is creating the images is wrong.. it works :-) ).
The Wiki generated images are available in the Wiki backend (they are
generated and saved in a special subdirectory of the image directory on
the Wiki server... they are available if needed.
To answer your questions about the possibility of a system where Wiki
pages can be shown directly in the help window of the application...
well... at this point, no, WIki help is not shown directly in the Help
window, but that could of course change in the future. Since this is
all still an unknown, there really is no way to know if such a system
would work with generated images or stored images.
