When you say RPC using thrift are you thinking of talking to HiveServer2 or
directly to the thrift metastore server? You don't want to talk directly to
thrift metastore. Hive tends to view this as an internal interface and
guarantees of stability are not strong.
You could do things via HS2 but you'll get back strings rather than the JSON
you'd get back via WebHCat. Parsing those strings will be painful.
