We have always displayed the WIRE debug messages, haven't we? You can
turn it off with the log level, but I don't mind if we change the log
level by default for releases.

Yes, we probably should. I forgot about this since we didn't have an
issue for it attached to the release. As Karl says, we can fix it in a
minor release.

The source and binary release archives, signature files, SHA and MD5
