It is strange. During my tests I changed the line you mention into:

Thread thread = new Thread(this, "localShell");
thread.setDaemon(false);
thread.start();
{code}
and the problem was gone. I know it is strange as by default the thread is not
a daemon thread but maybe I miss something here.
More, I cannot test now as my whole testing infrastructure (the pax runner
profile) is blocked by FELIX-1115.
