The attached patch has the following improvements:
1) Adds getFramework() method to return the created framework instance. This
will be useful for subclasses on the Main class.
2) Minor exception handling improvements. For example, ensures the right error
message is displayed when the framework fails to start up or stop, and avoids
NPE when the framework fails to start up.
