What exactly is the problem here? I have no problem in applying those
patches easily with svn

Creating a branch in svn is easy as well (svn cp). I assume you mean the
merging part which is better in git?

This is only an advantage if we want to go there and I saw more
objection on doing that than on going to git in general.

This change has a significant influence on everyone, so lazy consensus
does not apply here.
We need a formal vote which needs to be open for some time to give
everyone a chance. But before starting this, we really should agree that
the above are the advantages and that  there are no disadvantages.

I don't want to block the move, however rushing it through is not a good
idea either and taking some days time to think about it, gives everyone
a chance to voice his opinion.
