there is an Java extension in php, which is not enabled per default.
Some say, it's not the best at all. Some switch to java-php-bridge which
is open source and reliable.

You need not only Java installed, but PHP and Apache and the
javaphp-bridge or the configuration must be ok. Its not such easy for
newbies.
As a optional component, yes, would be great.

I would like to help with that, i wrote lots of php stuff before ages. :-)
