Superscripts (<sup>) don't work in .pdf

Superscripts (<sup>foo</sup>) work fine in html, but not pdf. It is as if the
tag was not present--the content appears (foo), but size and baseline are not
changed. See, for example,
http://hadoop.apache.org/core/docs/current/quickstart.html, search for "Java"
and compare with pdf (button in upper right corner).
