reduce the size of the "body" section of html output

There are "comments" and extra whitespace in the html output.
Of course, people could use the capabilities of their web server to do HTTP
compression, e.g. with mod_gzip.
However, it would still be useful to have minimal extra content by default.
Some indentation is definitely useful.
