Of course, you could do some template that contains things like ${someLocalDateTime}, and then see what it renders. Don't forget about setting incompatibleImprovements, as for backward compatibility this feature is disabled by default.
Migrating to Gradle is a PR which wasn't yet merged, simply due to lack of time. My plan was/is to finish FREEMARKER-35, create a release (or create another smaller release before that), and then deal with the Gradle PR that tagtes 2.x.
