Hmm, that bug (cutting the first character) was fixed some time ago ...
Ah, yes, in 597:

If that number (584) is the "official" revision number, you might want to
update ... we're currently at 641.
I see that your second test used 1.0.17 ... That fix was in 1.0.16.
