There have been no comments on the alternatives. I am now proposing that we use unaltered JGroups for UDP communication but implement membership management and failure detection outside of JGroups. We will use interfaces allowing other implementations but the first impl will be from the ground up and be as closely aligned to the current behavior as possible.
Please send comments. I am beginning to write a functional specification.
