Errmm, it looks like it's specific to my environment (Ubuntu 7.x, Sun JDK 1.5 release 11), I just tried it on my Mac (Mac OS 10.4.10, Apple JDK 1.5release 5) and it was A-OK. When I figure out the issue, I'll post it.
