Alan, Kevan, can you try changing the maven-eclipsepde-plugin version dependency to 1.2-SNAPSHOT and see if the code at least compiles now?
If that works, then I think we should release the 1.2 version of maven-eclipsepde-plugin and update GEP to use it.
