If maven is doing fork test as default I would do that. At least until
you converted all maven users to gradle users.
Perhaps another option is to add a Maven compatibility plugin, which
tweaks the java plugin to be more maven-like. That way, we can provide
some of these 'questionable' behaviours without baking it into the core.
