I think the google source is just a mirror, you can ignore that. This was something done by Greg Brandt. We did not have the bandwidth to bring it to master as we did not deploy it in production. Feel free to take this as the base and make it work in production and contribute it back to Helix.
Also, take a look at helix-front. This is the ui currently used at LinkedIn and is tested in production. It might be a good idea to bring in the helix-ui code into helix-front.
