No, it can't be omitted. It should not be in brackets.
bq. does this also work for "alter schema"?
I just checked the code, the existing "ALTER (DATABASE|SCHEMA) database_name
SET DBPROPERTIES" as well as this one don't work with "schema" keyword. Created
HIVE-6601 to track that.
