Thanks for the background information.  I filed
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HTRACE-376 to continue this
discussion.  Definitely agree that more granularity would be nice, at
least as an option.  Also added you to the contributor role on JIRA
(that lets you post patches and so forth if you want).
