Automatic as in "a script does it"? I just moved the old release I was replacing manually from www.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/linux to archive.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/linux/old. Should I have left it?

Yes. There is really no need to move stuff around. As files are added and deleted from www.apache.org, they will just accumulate in whatever directory in the archives.
